Consultation Time: What should I bring?

My background as a fashion stylist has trained me to study trends and details that are theme related. I've always applied the very same skill to styling flowers for weddings. I often ask brides to bring in examples of arrangements they like or inspirational photos. These help me to understand not only a bride's taste but act as design clues. I may notice that there's a consistent percentage of greens in each bouquet, that the colors are all monochromatic, or the same berries show up in each image. Often the bride is completely unaware that she even has a consistent floral style...she just knew they liked the photos online.

My favorite place to draw inspiration from is Snippet & Ink. It's amazing how creative people can be! I love typing in a color and seeing how many different ways the same color can be used. Don't feel weird about walking into a consultation meeting with photos, swatches, and favors. As a visual person it allows me to quickly get to know you, I love it!

The Mini Calla Lily

They have such a beautiful shape and their flexible stems allow for an artist to manipulate their direction in fun and fantastic ways. The price of these gems is high compared to the overall footprint of space, but then...the calla lily girl knows this and doesn't care. She knows what she likes and wants it to be perfect in all its glorious simplicity.

The guys they date are shocked at first when they see how petite they are. Yet the man who orders them after years of marriage understands that this is a special treat and one that scores him A LOT of points in the long run!

* Calla lily stems should only be in 1-2 inches of water.

Fleurty 2.011 The Next Evolution

February 22, 2011
Dear Friends,

After 5 years of operating in our Central Expressway location, Fleurty Studio will be closing its brick and mortar doors and expanding our online presence. We decided to do this so that we can devote our full attention to the weddings, events and weekly accounts while pursuing our other interests outside of the confines of the walls and hours posted.

Although we are excited about this new evolution of Fleurty, we will miss our day to day visits and interactions with all of our good friends who we've made throughout the 5 years we have been in business. Thank you for your patronage and for sharing the pinnacle moments of your lives with us.

Sincerely yours,

The Yamazaki Family, a.k.a "Fleurty"

Fleurty on the Intuit Small Business United Blog

“Fleurtyng” with Innovation

by Troy Marcyes - February 10, 2010

In an economy where flowers have become a luxury and in an industry that many consider traditional, a small floral design boutique has Silicon Valley buzzing. Fleurty has found fame not only with its distinctive floral designs, but also in its innovative approach to the floral business. In fact, one of its owners, Kosei Yamazaki, shared his insights into how small businesses can survive and thrive in the rough economy at a recent Intuit Small Business Town Hall.

We’ll let the business speak for itself.

Business name: Fleurty
Owners: Sachi and Kosei Yamazaki
Location: Mountain View, CA
Industry: Floral design studio
Street rep: Edgy twists on modern floral designs for every occasion

Innovation in design: Their arrangement names - like “crystal and ice,” “truelips,” the “twilight,” and “sunburst” - are as creative and fresh as the flowers they use.
Innovation in business: Key social levers that have catapulted Fleurty to local notoriety include Facebook, Twitter, Yelp and a company blog, where the owners share design inspirations, their creative thought processes and customer stories. The company ’s online presence represents its marketing muscle and has served a crucial role in sustaining Fleurty’s growth during the downturn, liberating them from a reliance on walk-ins.

“We do a lot of customized designs for people and it’s a challenge to have a standard floral shopping cart on a website when working with seasonal materials that may only be available for a month,” said Sachi Yamazaki. “Luckily we have gained a lot of trust from our customers and they know that we strive to exceed their expectations every time. We email or text images of the exact designs ordered because we are proud of our designs and all the feedback is so valuable to our business.”

Giving back: The strongest business-community relationships are symbiotic: local residents buy from local businesses and local businesses reinvest in the community. Fleurty is a good example of this type of relationship. Sachi and Kosei volunteered at the PAWS, Art and Wine! Holiday Faire last December to raise money for Furry Friends Rescue, an organization that saves abandoned dogs and cats. Fleurty offered event attendees a special promotion on its arrangements.

Tip to thrive: “We don’t think of the social media outlets as advertising, since advertising traditionally means a one way form of communication,” said Yamazaki. ”It’s more like an extension of small town customer relations. We are able to learn more about our customers and they learn more about us. Flowers are often purchased for milestones in people’s lives, so it is to our benefit to build a relationship with that seventeen year old kid who comes to us for a prom corsage and maintain their communications for future events, such as a graduation or maybe a wedding and possibly a first baby.”

Designer Terrariums @ Fleurty Studio

Fleurty proudly carries Green Under Glass a collection of little living pieces of art designed by artist Kat Geiger. She began creating terrariums and other indoor landscaping after moving to an apartment with no outdoor space in 2001. The rest, as they say is history. Almost three years later, her terrarium studio has exploded and earned its very own title, "Green Under Glass."
"I kill all my plants." At Fleurty we hear this confession time and time again from our customers. Usually paired with a look of defeat, they admit to sunlight over exposure, or under watering or drowning the plants that they previously owned. This is why a terrarium is a wonderful baby step towards feeling like you've got a green thumb...or maybe a light green pinky.

Perfect for a cubicle space these little creations, many of which are made in recycled bottles, are easy to care for. Most just need a spritz of water once a week or once a month. The easiest type only requires that you keep moss hydrated. Everyone can enjoy a little Green Under Glass!

Highschool Prom Buying Guide

It's Prom time and everything is set! Hot date, perfect dress, transportation secured, and now... Flowers? This is a fairly new experience for most, so here are some easy tips to getting the most unique and fashionable prom florals.

The Corsage:

What color dress is she wearing? The corsage flowers do not have to match the dress shade exactly but should coordinate nicely with the color. If you don't know the color of the dress, don't default to a white corsage. White corsages rarely show detail in pictures, wear out faster than other flower colors, and dilute color...as opposed to ENHANCING color. Try a corsage with multiple colors!

What style is the dress? Clubby & Hot, Romantic & Soft, or maybe Dark & Sophisticated? This information helps the designer choose what sort of ribbon and greenery to add to the corsage. Often times it's the floral "Supporting Cast Members" that make the biggest difference from your red rose corsage and the other red rose corsage that your friend is wearing.

The Boutonniere:

What handsome color ensemble is he wearing? If he's wearing a black tux, opt for a ribbon that will stand out against it. As for the flower, try and see if you can coordinate the flowers for the boutonniere with the flowers in the corsage. This makes for a more cohesive look and everyone will know who you walked in with ;)

How can you "pimp" it out? If your dress is printed with animal patterns, polka dots, or piped trim...tell your designer! It's always possible to add an additional pop to the boutonniere that makes it your own!

Time for the Big Night!

It's best to order at least a week beforehand. Tell your designer what is the most important thing to you...flowers that dry nicely, smell delicious, match your eye shadow? Trust your floral designer to know what flowers will hold up the best throughout all the dancing, chest-bumping, and after party dessert shoveling.

Spruce Up Your Office Space! Green Thumb Not Required)

Just because you may have had trouble keeping plants alive in the past, does not mean you’re destined to a dull and dusty office. Success with office plants is all about finding the right match and if you are busy and forgetful, we recommend these three beauties that seem to enjoy a bit of abuse:

1. Zamioculcus Zamiifolia: try saying that three times fast….or just do what normal people do and call it the “ZZ” or “Eternity plant.” This plant can take a great deal of abuse, requires virtually no light and can go long periods without water. It resembles a prehistoric palm with broad shiny green leaflets. Combined with the right container its dramatic architectural lines can add interest to any desktop or corner…it’s easy, eye-catching and definitely not your grandma’s spider plant.

2. Bromeliads: looking for a flower that doesn’t die? These funky epiphytes are probably as close as you can get. Sun loving members of the Pineapple family, these low maintenance Rosettes boast a variety of striking colors and flower shapes. They prefer direct sunlight but still perform fairly well under fluorescents. The best part is that they hold the water in the center of their leaves so you can see when they need to be refilled….no guess work takes low-maintenance to a new level.

3. Orchids: Many new orchid cultivars on the market are much hardier and cheaper than their predecessors and when combined with unique containers and accessories can transform any boring desktop into a dramatic “Orchidscape.” Their flowers, depending on the species, can last up to a month and with their affordability makes them easily replaceable allowing for everchanging year-round color and interest.

Love your Local

It was during my holiday shopping that I came across a huge red poster in the window of Builders Booksource. In large font it read,"Eat, Sleep, Read. Support independents in your community." I later found out that this poster is part of the IndieBound movement. It is an organization that educates the consumer on the importance of shopping locally. This is from their website.

indiebound
Why shop Indie?
When you shop at an independently owned business, your entire community benefits:

The Economy
Spend $100 at a local and $68 of that stays in your community. Spend the same $100 at a national chain, and your community only sees $43.
Local businesses create higher-paying jobs for our neighbors.
More of your taxes are reinvested in your community--where they belong.

The Environment
Buying local means less packaging, less transportation, and a smaller carbon footprint.
Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money to beautify your community.

The Community
Local retailers are your friends and neighbors—support them and they’ll support you.
Local businesses donate to charities at more than twice the rate of national chains.
More independents means more choice, more diversity, and a truly unique community.
Now is the time to stand up and join your fellow individuals in the IndieBound mission supporting local businesses and celebrating independents.

IndieBound supports Independent Business Alliances around the country.

A large portion of the flowers sold at Fleurty are grown locally from family owned farms. Some of the most beautiful two-toned tulips, gigantic oriental lilies, sweetest mini gerber daisies, and indigo blue delphinium are grown right here! We will continue to support these local farms and hope that by doing so, our customers support us and others in our community. Fleurty is Crafty!

At Fleurty Studio our designers work with fresh flowers, dried floral materials, wire, beads, ribbon, paint... almost anything goes! We did learn that jelly beans don't last in the cooler glued on to flowers (don't ask) and that gold spray painted pomelo's can look fantastic on display for weeks!
Here's a project to try at home that's easy and fun to make, Fleurty Forever Boutonnieres. Made with a strong magnet closure to keep secure throughout a night of dancing and then stuck on your magnet board long after!

-Gather fun dried materials, use floral tape and wire to secure fragile pieces first.

-Assemble together the components, using floral adhesive, secure the little pieces and magnet backing to the boutonniere.

-Lastly, I leave them unfinished until I know exactly what the final color scheme will be. Then I coordinate a ribbon to hide the tape and give it a polished look.

I think it's fantastic when our customers want to incorporate fresh flowers to their own handmade gifts to give. One bride in particular, Vanessa, meticulously made fabric leaves from a Martha Stewart tutorial and mailed them to us to incorporate with the fresh flowers used for her wedding boutonnieres. They looked FANTASTIC!

Here's a link to that project and more from other crafty sites...

Recently I found out about Polyvore and was immediately interested. I loved working with mixed media art ever since I was in high school. So I wanted to add some of Fleurty's designs to the website to see what the young artists on the site could create.

Here is one of the pieces by designer Marisolleke:

Flowers Shot and Brought to Life

When I found out that my dear friend Ken was now a photographer, I immediately thought about how I would love to have Fleurty's featured designs shot in a professional setting. Ken was (as always) enthusiastic about shooting a new medium and eagerly brought his equipment down to Mountain View for a photography session at Fleurty.

I couldn't have been happier with the results! Please enjoy a few of the photos and pay close attention to the lighting of glass surfaces and water in the vase. The photos look effortless but took a lot of skill to produce. Thanks Ken Phuong and Spot Nine Studio!
